Glacier Hiking PDF Print E-mail
The glacier hiking takes place in the world renowned Lyngen Alps – a chain of steep and high mountains surrounded by fjords. You need no previous glacier or hiking skills to participate. An introduction to glacier hiking will be held before the activity, with special focus on safety. Our experienced guides will accompany you on the spectacular Steindalsbreen glacier. First there is a 2-3 hour hiking up to the glacier. On the glacier you will be hiking in a “rope team” wearing helmets, ice axes and crampons attached to your shoes. During this exciting tour you will gain insight about the fascinating Saami and Kven cultures, and the area's unique flora and geology. Two meals are included. Tempo and routes will be adjusted according to your previous skills and fitness. To participate on a hiking of this length you must however have a normal physical health.

We pick you up on our bus or minibus in the town centre of Tromsø, by the hotel Rica. The town centre is very compact, so you will easily find the pick up point. We then transport you a 90 minute drive out in the wilderness, to the starting point of the mountain hiking route.

Planning tip: Instead of going back to town after the excursion you can transfer directly to spending the night in a Sami tent or timber cabin in our wilderness camp – Camp Tamok - located nearby. Check out “Night in Sami tent” and “Night in timber cabin” in the summer menu. If you spend the night in the camp, we can take care of your additional luggage during your stay, so that you do not need to pay for hotel in town the same night. After spending the night in the camp, you can of course also transfer directly to one of our adventures the following day.

Tips about glacier hiking:
For best hiking comfort you should bring your own tested hiking shoes. We recommend a small and lightweight backpack (20-30 litres). There will be colder up on the glacier than in lower terrain, and often more wind. It is therefore smart to bring a fleece sweater in your backpack, to put on during breaks and meals. Hiking uphill will make you thirsty, so bring your water bottle. There are many mountain streams with pure drinkable water for refilling. It is also nice to have some chocolate or other fast carbohydrates. Taking in small amounts of carbohydrates on resting stops will give you a boost of energy.
